The U.S. Thanksgiving Day holiday was signed into law by Abraham Lincoln during the Civil War. It’s interesting that a spirit of thanksgiving was produced during such a turbulent time in our history.
I’ve been reading Carl Sandburg’s account of Lincoln’s life during the Civil War (The War Years) and it is a miracle that we survived this divided period as “One Nation Under God.”
The knowledge of the past provides perspective today. For example, even though our current President has failed to achieve his campaign promise of bringing people together, we are still one nation. We may be divided by our philosophy but we are together as a nation. We may argue about whether or not to support the “war on terror” but we are not at war with eachother. There are not 40,000 American’s lying dead in an open field in our own country today- slaughtered by our own hands.
The economy is weak but most of us still have our homes, clothes, and food to eat. In fact, the average American is not suffering in any way, shape, or form. On the contrary, obesity is our problem today!
So, in addition to being thankful for what we have today, let’s remember those who gave their lives to save this great country and the ideals it was founded on. Let’s remember those who protect and defend us today. And let’s stand up and fight against those who would seek to destroy this country and the principles it was founded upon.
God help this country if any generation refuses to do its part. Let us not be that generation!
